Z9967 .45 Teatfire Cartridge Williamson’s Patent 1864
Description: Nice example of the .45 Teat-Fire cartridge. These distinctive cartridges were patented by David Williamson of Brooklyn, New York, on January 5, 1864, and assigned to Moore's Patent Fire Arms Company. According to Dean S. Thomas, the design "was developed explicitly for a revolver that could circumvent the Rollin White / Smith & Wesson patent,” which at the time restricted the manufacture of bored-through cylinder revolvers.
The .45 caliber variation was produced for use in the "National Revolver” manufactured by National Arms Company of Brooklyn, New York, circa 1865–1870. Its defining feature is the projecting nipple, or "teat,” which contains the fulminate priming compound. When struck by the hammer, this teat is crushed to ignite the charge, while the copper case houses the powder and heeled bullet.
U.S. Patent No. 41,183 improved reliability by allowing more consistent ignition with a lighter hammer strike, while the hemispherical (dome-shaped) base reduced the likelihood of the case backing out or binding in the cylinder during operation.
Condition is very good overall, with a nicely rounded case mouth and an attractive dark, aged patina. A small "6” has been scratched into the case—an old marking with matching age and tone. The case shows a few minor spots, along with four small tics on the rounded head. The bullet is secured by a four-segment crimp approximately .525” below the case mouth, which is slightly flared. An excellent, well-preserved example of a scarce .45 Teat-Fire cartridge from the early patent ignition era.
