Z9968 .56-50 Spencer Rimfire Cartridge – Raised SAW Headstamp
Description: Scarce example of the .56-50 Spencer rimfire cartridge featuring the desirable raised "SAW” headstamp. These were produced by Sage Ammunition Works (circa 1864–1866) of Middletown, Connecticut, and saw use in the Spencer Model 1865 carbine as well as other firearms chambered for the new ".50 Carbine” rimfire cartridge.
This example is fitted with a flat-nose lead bullet seated in a copper case, with three distinct bullet seating crimps located approximately .375” below the case mouth, each measuring about .340” in length.
Condition is good to very good. The bullet shows light oxidation, while the case exhibits some spotting and a pleasing age-darkened patina. The raised "SAW” headstamp is partially visible depending on angle—the "W” remaining especially crisp. As is typical with these, it is uncommon to find examples with all three letters equally well defined.
A solid, collectible example of the earliest .56-50 Spencer cartridge variation with raised headstamp.
