M001 .50-70 Benet Primed Blank Cartridge with Neck
Description: Nice example of an unusual .50-70 Government blank cartridge, likely manufactured at Frankford Arsenal. This specimen is an internally Benet-primed centerfire cartridge featuring a shallow copper cup retained by two sidewall crimps located approximately .215” forward of the head. The crimps measure about .500” in width, with a gap of roughly .195” between them.
The powder charge is held in place by a wad positioned approximately .422” below the case mouth. The copper case is cylindrically throated and exhibits a distinct neck at the case mouth, adding to its atypical appearance. Overall, this is an oddball blank that does not neatly conform to standard known examples. It is worth noting that a shot cartridge produced by U.S.C.Co. displays a somewhat similar neck configuration, making this an interesting and somewhat enigmatic variant.
