M004 Early .50-70 Benet-Primed Cartridge with Iron Cup - Experimental
Description: Nice example of an early .50-70-450 Government experimental cartridge manufactured at Frankford Arsenal. This variant utilizes the early straight-wall case, a style that was phased out in September of 1869. It features a tinned iron (ferrous) internal cup and a flat-nose lead bullet roll crimped into a copper case.

What sets this example apart is the crimp configuration. The tall iron cup is retained by two short crimps positioned approximately .270” forward of the head, each measuring about .280” in length—an uncommon arrangement compared to typical service patterns. This configuration does not correspond to the standard documented service cartridges, suggesting an experimental or transitional variation.

The case appears to have been cleaned and coated long ago, with a cartridge designation written along the side. It also shows three dents consistent with handling. Overall, this is a decent example of a scarcer early variant featuring an iron cup and straight-wall case construction.
