M097 .50-45 Cadet Ammunition Box Frankford Arsenal - 1869
Description: Scarce early Indian War-era .50-45 Cadet ammunition box manufactured at the Frankford Arsenal in 1869. Originally, this box would have contained twenty .50-45-385 centerfire cartridges for use in U.S. Cadet rifles, including the Springfield Model 1867 Cadet Rifle, the Model 1867 Navy Cadet Rifle, and Navy Cadet carbines, all chambered for this short-lived cartridge.

The box remains intact and is constructed of pasteboard wrapped in buff brown paper with a printed black label. It retains the original internal cardboard divider, and the top flap still opens as intended. One original (not necessarily original to the box) bar-anvil primed cartridge remains inside. The front label reads:

"20 CENTRE-PRIMED, METALLIC CARTRIDGES, CAL: .50. Charge, 45 Grains Musket Powder. Weight of Bullet, 385 Grains Frankford Arsenal 1869.”

Condition shows period wear, with repairs present along the corners, edges, and top, most notably at the ends and lid. Despite this, the box displays well and retains strong structural integrity.

A desirable and scarce example of early U.S. military metallic cartridge packaging that would pair nicely with an original Cadet rifle or complement any Indian War-era collection.
