M099 .40-60 Maynard Cartridge – Model 1873
Description: Nice example of the .40-60 Maynard cartridge manufactured by the Massachusetts Arms Company of Chicopee Falls, Massachusetts. The Model or Series 1873 Maynard cartridges featured a distinctive three-piece case construction consisting of a brass tube soldered to a solid machined head fitted with an iron or steel anvil.
This example is loaded with a factory lead .40 caliber conical belted flat-nose bullet seated over 60 grains of black powder in a brass case. It is fitted with a brass Berdan primer, consistent with later Maynard cartridge development and represents an improvement over the earlier separate priming system.
Condition remains very good, with scattered spotting and areas of age patina visible on the case. An excellent representative example from the desirable 1873 series of Maynard cartridges.
