M116 11mm Javelle Horizontal Pinfire Cartridge
Description: Nice example of the inside-primed 11mm Javelle horizontal pinfire cartridge manufactured by Michel Javelle. This unusual cartridge system was patented in France during the early 1860s and represents one of the more experimental ignition systems developed during the formative years of metallic cartridge design.

The cartridge is classified as a horizontal pinfire design utilizing an internal priming system. Unlike a conventional pinfire cartridge, where the pin protrudes from the side of the case, the Javelle system incorporates a firing pin positioned internally, running horizontally from the center of the cartridge head toward the cavity in the base of the bullet. A percussion cap is fitted against base of the bullet with the internal pin resting against it. When the head of the cartridge is struck, the pin is driven forward, crushing the fulminate within the cap and igniting the cartridge.

This example is especially distinctive in that the case is constructed of cast lead formed in a two-piece mold. The mold seam is clearly visible along both sides of the case body and across the head. The cartridge features a flat head with a raised "J” headstamp, while the pointed lead bullet is secured with a traditional roll crimp.

This example remains in decent overall condition. The case exhibits a few bulges, which are commonly encountered on these cartridges. The bullet remains in good shape, while one side of the case shows a slight inward push accompanied by a small pinhole. Overall, this is an excellent example of an early self-contained French cartridge from the 1860s and a fascinating representation of experimental metallic cartridge development.
