Indian War U.S. Model 1872 Meat Can
M134 Indian War U.S. Model 1872 Meat Can
Description: Excellent example of the U.S. Model 1872 Meat Can. These meat cans were issued to both Infantry and Cavalry units and were used to contain oily meat rations issued to the troops. The tin can was designed to fit into the front pocket of the Model 1872 haversack or into saddlebags for mounted use. The large tin handle is both soldered and riveted for added strength and durability. The sliding lid can also be inverted and used as a cup.
These meat cans, often referred to as early mess kits, were quickly phased out in favor of the more familiar U.S. Model 1874 Meat Can. This example remains in excellent condition, having reportedly resided in the Stone House Museum in Belchertown, Massachusetts since 1973. The can is embossed with a "U.S.” within an oval on both sides and still retains portions of its original finish, which appears to have been lightly oiled for preservation.
All components remain functional, and the can is free of dents, cracks, or repairs. Overall, this is an exceptional example of the first regulation meat can issued to the U.S. Army and Cavalry.
