.22 Short Smokeless Ammunition Meriden Fire Arms Co.
M149 .22 Short Smokeless Ammunition Meriden Fire Arms Co.
Description: Nice, full, and correct box of .22 Short rimfire cartridges manufactured for the Meriden Fire Arms Company of Meriden, Connecticut. The Meriden Fire Arms Company was acquired by Sears, Roebuck and Company around 1905. Although Sears did not manufacture ammunition themselves, they marketed ammunition under a variety of private-label trade names, with production contracted to established ammunition manufacturers. This particular box is believed to have been manufactured for Meriden Fire Arms Co. by Robin Hood prior to 1910, based on the early style of the box and labeling.
This two-piece half-split box features a buff paper wrap with a green wrap-around label printed in cream-colored lettering. A portion of the wrap-around label is missing from one end of the box and extends slightly onto the bottom edge of one side.
The cartridges are loaded with lead bullets seated in copper cases over smokeless powder. The copper cases are unheadstamped.
The box itself shows only minimal wear and light soiling. The top label remains excellent and fully legible, as does one side panel. The bottom portion of the label also remains very nice with only minor handling wear.
Overall, this is an excellent example of an early Meriden Fire Arms Company box of .22 Short smokeless rimfire cartridges.
