M150 Civil War .44 Colt Revolving Rifle Ammunition Packet
Description: Nice, full packet of .44 caliber Colt Revolving Rifle combustible cartridges manufactured by Colt Cartridge Works. This packet contains six combustible envelope cartridges loaded with Hazard’s powder and intended for use in the various .44 caliber Colt revolving long arms, including the Model 1855 half-stock and full-stock sporting rifles, the Model 1855 military rifle and rifled musket, and the Model 1855 revolving carbine, all of which utilized six-shot cylinders.
The cartridges are housed in a split wooden block fitted with a brass wire opener and wrapped in shellacked paper for protection against moisture and field use. This style of packaging was introduced around 1860 and remained in production throughout the Civil War period. An interesting feature of this particular packet is the notation for "21-33” barrels, a marking not commonly encountered on these packets.
The packet remains in very nice condition overall. The outer label is well-centered and fully legible with strong, clear markings. The packet remains sealed on three sides, though the paper along the top has cracked open slightly, revealing the cartridges within, which remain secured in the wooden block.
Overall, this is an attractive example of a Civil War-era Colt Cartridge Works combustible cartridge packet that would display nicely alongside any .44 caliber Colt Revolving Rifle or Carbine.
