M171 .40-70 Maynard Cartridge Case with Brass Rivet – M1865 Series
Description: Nice example of a .40-70 Maynard cartridge case manufactured by the Massachusetts Arms Company. These cases were used in the Model 1865 series Maynard sporting rifles. This example appears to have been fired and employs a brass balloon rivet. The rivet is believed to have added strength between the rim and case body compared to the earlier soldered-seam construction. On the riveted version, the two-piece case was both riveted and soldered.
Based on Murphy's research, the .40-70 case is known with both unriveted and brass-riveted heads. While it is not known exactly when production changed to the riveted design, Murphy notes that his patent application for the riveted head was rejected in 1869.
It is important to note that the Model 1865-series .40-70 cartridge case is considerably scarcer than its Model 1873 counterpart. The case exhibits some spotting, and the head/rim are slightly wavy. If you collect Maynard cartridges, this case may be needed to complete a representative example of the riveted series.
