Z8834 Rare .28 Colt Pocket Revolver Cartridge Packet (Published)
Description: Nice example of the rare .28 Pocket Revolver ammunition packet manufactured by Colt Cartridge Works of Hartford, Connecticut. This packet contains five combustible envelope cartridges loaded with Hazard’s powder. These small-sized cartridges were specifically used in the Colt Model 1855 Sidehammer Revolver, commonly known as the Colt "Root” Revolver. This packet would be appropriate for a Model 3 of the 1855 Sidehammer Pocket Revolver in .28 caliber.
The cartridges are housed in a split wooden block with a brass wire opener; all wrapped in shellacked paper. This style of packaging was introduced in 1860 and remained in use throughout the Civil War. Production of the .28 caliber packets was very limited compared to the larger calibers, making surviving examples especially rare.
This packet is in very good condition. The outer label is well-centered on the face and remains legible. The sides are nicely sealed. There are minor cracks in the wrapper on both the top and bottom of the packet with a little wear to the corners. The brass wire opener is intact, although broken off. This is the exact item pictured in the reference book and comes from the renowned collection of Terry White, whose collection sticker is still affixed to the back of the packet. Overall, this is a superb example of a very rare .28 caliber Colt Root Revolver ammunition packet!
