Z8872 Civil War D.C. Sage .44 Colt Army Ammunition Packet (Published)

Description: Full and correct ammunition packet containing six seamless skin cartridges with percussion caps. These were manufactured by D.C. Sage of Middletown, Connecticut, a company in operation from late 1862 to 1864.

D.C. Sage produced a wide variety of cartridges under Julius Hotchkiss’s patent, dated February 11, 1862, which covered improvements in skin (combustible) cartridges. These were sold to the Ordnance Department through agents W.J. Syms & Bro.

This published example is in decent shape. It contains a wooden block with seven open holes—six holding cartridges and the seventh holding percussion caps. The entire block is wrapped in lightly soiled buff paper with a black-printed label on the face. The top edge of the packet shows a few paper tears caused by the noses of the bullets. Interestingly, this example retains remnants of the original tear string, which is blue in color.

This is the exact item pictured in the reference book and comes from the renowned collection of Terry White, with his collection sticker still affixed to the back of the packet. This Civil War-era ammunition packet would be an ideal accessory for any cased .44 Colt Army revolver manufactured between 1862 and 1864.
