Description: This is an inside-primed cartridge designed for the French Perrin revolver, a double-action military handgun adopted in limited numbers during the mid-19th century. The Perrin featured a solid frame and was chambered for the distinctive 12mm cartridge, which used an internal primer system rather than a traditional rimfire or external percussion cap.
Although primarily a French design, Perrin revolvers and their cartridges were imported into the United States in small quantities during the American Civil War, often as substitute standard sidearms for Union officers or cavalry units when domestic supply fell short. These revolvers were part of a broader trend of foreign arms supplementing U.S. arsenals during the conflict.
This cartridge is a solid and representative example of this uncommon Civil War-era import. A great addition to any early metallic cartridge or Civil War ammunition collection.
