Civil War D.C. Sage .44 Colt Army Ammunition Packet (Published)
Z9046 Civil War D.C. Sage .44 Colt Army Ammunition Packet (Published)
Description: Full and correct Civil War-era ammunition packet containing six seamless skin cartridges with percussion caps, manufactured by D.C. Sage of Middletown, Connecticut, a firm active from late 1862 through 1864.
D.C. Sage produced a wide variety of cartridges under Julius Hotchkiss’s patent, dated February 11, 1862, which covered improvements in skin (combustible) cartridge construction.
This published example is in decent condition and features a wooden block with seven open holes—six for the cartridges and one for percussion caps. The block is wrapped in buff paper showing light soiling and retains its black-printed label on the face. Both the top and bottom edges have been coated and sealed—possibly by Terry White or another collector. It does not appear to be an original period-applied finish.
This is the exact item pictured in the reference book, and it originates from the renowned collection of Terry White. The remnants of his inventory sticker are still visible on the back of the packet.
An excellent accessory for any cased .44 Colt Army revolver manufactured between 1862 and 1864, this cartridge packet remains exceptionally clean for its age—a fine example of a scarce and desirable piece of Civil War ammunition.
