Z9164 Lawrence Primer Tube for Sharps Rifles & Carbines

Description: Here is a very nice example of a Lawrence primer tube charger made for Sharps rifles and carbines. The charger consists of a brass tube, a wooden dowel, and a wooden chuck or piston. The copper pellet primers were originally contained on the opposite side of the wooden chuck.

These improved pellet primers were manufactured under U.S. Patent No. 9,820, dated June 28, 1853, and were designed for use in conjunction with Patent No. 9,308 of October 5, 1852, which covered a new method of priming firearms. In use, the charger was inserted into the mechanism, and the wooden chuck or piston was pressed down, feeding 20 or more primers into the system.

Once emptied, the spent charger could be removed, leaving the primers in place. This particular example retains over 20 pellet primers along with its original wooden chuck. The brass tube shows only light oxidation, consistent with age.
