Z9448 Confederate .45 Whitworth Rifle Cartridge
Description: Excellent, high-quality example of a .45 Whitworth cartridge designed for use in the famous .45 Whitworth rifles created by Sir Joseph Whitworth of England. These precision rifles were renowned for their exceptional accuracy and featured Whitworth’s distinctive hexagonal bore. During the American Civil War, a limited number of these rifles were imported and became favored weapons of Confederate sharpshooters for their long-range capability and consistent performance.
Whitworth rifles were capable of firing either cylindrical or hexagonal bullets, and their cartridges were produced in both thin white paper and cardboard tube forms. This example represents the cardboard type. The bullet’s nose is visible at the front, secured by a single cannelure around the case. The rear end of the cartridge houses the powder charge and features a distinctive red band with an attached pull strip for opening.
This cartridge remains in excellent condition, showing very minimal soiling and tight seams with no splitting—a true testament to its careful preservation. A superb example of a scarce Whitworth cartridge, ideal for display in any Civil War, British arms, or antique ammunition collection.
