.44 Henry Rimfire “Woodcut” Box — U.S. Cartridge Company (c.1880s)
Z9468 .44 Henry Rimfire "Woodcut” Box — U.S. Cartridge Company (c.1880s)
Description: Scarce example of a late 19th-century .44 Henry Rimfire ammunition box manufactured by the United States Cartridge Company of Lowell, Massachusetts. Commonly referred to by collectors as the "Woodcut” label, this box dates to the 1880s and originally contained 50 cartridges. It now holds 15 original rounds belonging to the .44 Henry Flat, Long Case family. Introduced around 1872, the long-case .44 Henry represented the final iteration of this iconic rimfire cartridge. While best known for its use in the Henry rifle, it was also chambered in the Winchester Model 1866 and the Colt Open Top Revolver.
This two-piece box remains solid and complete, showing honest age and handling. Much of the original paper wrap and label survive, with expected wear, small losses, and surface cracking typical of a well-used box of this era. The corners and seams show moderate wear with a few small seam repairs. The side seal strips are largely intact across the front and sides, with partial loss along the rear panel. Both end labels display the cartridge designation, while the front panel features callouts for the Winchester Repeating Rifle (Model 1866) and Colt’s Rimfire Revolver. The handsome woodcut hunting scene label remains intact and slightly darker in tone than it appears in photos; faint traces of the original red ink cartridge stamp are still visible.
An attractive and seldom-seen example that would make an excellent addition to any Henry or early Winchester cartridge collection. This box displays beautifully alongside a Henry rifle, Model 1866 Winchester, or Colt Open Top revolver—a classic artifact of the American West and the rimfire era.
