Z9549 .44 Johnston and Dow Cartridge for Colt Army Revolver
Description: Great example of the .44 Johnston and Dow combustible paper cartridge used in Colt .44 "Army” revolvers. These cartridges are often misidentified as "skin” cartridges, but they represent a distinct design patented by Algernon K. Johnston and Lorenzo Dow on October 1, 1861 (U.S. Patent No. 38,393). Their innovation featured a paper envelope that was both highly combustible and moisture resistant. The paper case was nitrated and then coated with collodion to make it waterproof, eliminating the need to tear the cartridge open before loading.
This particular example remains in stable and well-preserved condition. The cartridge case is firmly attached to the raised ring just above the rebated base. A fine example of a Civil War combustible cartridge used in the Colt "Army” revolvers.
