Description: Excellent example of the highly sought-after Winchester 8-gauge 1901 series Leader "Shoe Box” shotshell box. The 1901 series was produced only as new primed empties (N.P.E.) and sold from 1901 through 1919. When new, this box held fifty red paper 1901 LEADER shells; it now contains 32 NPE shells, all in great condition. These waterproofed shells were designed for use with the then-new smokeless powders. Each 3¼" 8-gauge shell features a red paper case, high brass with four corrugations—three positioned high and one low—and is fitted with the New No. 4 primer introduced in 1904. Based on these characteristics, this box dates solidly to the 1904–1919 period.
The two-piece box itself is in excellent condition, showing only typical shelf wear along the corners and edges. The one-piece wraparound label remains clean, bright, and fully legible on the top and both ends, with the graphics aligning perfectly. The interior is clean, with two noted repairs: one inside the top lid, and another at a bottom corner where tape has been applied (see photos). The box shows light to moderate soiling but retains strong colors overall. A small dent is present on the lid between "EMPTY” and "8 Ga.” on the upper label—minor, but mentioned for accuracy. The license label on the base is fully legible, which is uncommon as these are often scuffed.
If you’re looking for a high-quality Winchester 8-gauge shotshell box, this example is an excellent candidate. While currently partial at 32 rounds, it would not be difficult to complete. A great early-1900s Winchester shotshell box that displays wonderfully.
