Z4544 Very Rare .58 Waterproof Cartridge by Bartholow

Description: Here is one that you don't see every day. This style of cartridge was patented by Roberts Bartholow on May 21, 1861, as Patent No. 32,345. The manufacturing process was similar to that of Hazard's Patent. The powder is pressed and is more granular than your Hazard cartridge. While both types were coated in collodion, Bartholow's patented cartridge had the powder charge affixed to the bullet via a silk strip. This cartridge was broken and has been repaired around the middle.

Measures: OAL 1.736"

Provenance: Terry White, April 1993

Reference: Round Ball to Rimfire Vol. 1 Pg. 160 No. 231
