Z4801 .36 "Pressed Waterproof" Colt Navy Cartridge (Hazard Powder Company)

Description: Here is nice and hard to find .44 cartridge by Hazard Powder Company. This one is intact and had a few cracks in the very thin collodion outer layer. It has been coated to prevent further deterioration and the pressed powder cake has a shiny sheen. These were manufactured under patent# 34,725 that was awarded to R. Ogden Dormeus and Bern L. Budd of New York, NY on March 18, 1862. The cartridge is made of compressed powder and is firmly affixed to the bottom of the bullet. The outer waterproofing layer was manufactured under patent#34,744 which was granted to the same individuals on March 25, 1862. The outer layer which protected the powder from moisture is a thin layer of collodion.
