Z4831 Counterfeit Charlestown, Virginia Obsolete Fifteen Cent Note January 1, 1862

Description: Excellent counterfeit currency note originally printed as a facsimile by Samuel C. Upham (1819-1885). The vignette on the front left side of the note is an Indian maiden. The note is payable by David Howell the Treasurer of the Corporation of Charlestown, Va.. The paper is almost exactly like the original notes. However, there are a few things that aren't correct. The signatures as well as the serial number of "576." are printed instead of being handwritten. The plate letter of "G" is another dead giveaway. Although these were originally printed by Samuel Upham as a collectible facsimile, they were later used as regular notes in late 1862-1863. Notes like these helped to drive up inflation in the South creating instability in the monetary system.
