Z5270 .54 Burnside Carbine Cartridge
Description: Here is a nice example of a Civil War .54 Burnside carbine cartridge. This cartridge design was patented by George Foster on April 10, 1860 and is listed under the patent #27,791. The "swell" around the case mouth held lubricant rather than the typical grooves. The swell on this example has a couple of very small dents which is quite common on these cartridges due to the way they were stacked in the paper packet. There is a small flat spot near the tip of the projectile.
