RZ5468 Loaded .58 Ager Auxiliary Chamber for Union Repeating Gun
Description: Here is a loaded example of the .58 auxiliary chamber used in William Ager’s "Union Repeating Gun” or "Coffee-Mill” gun. It’s unknown why this gun was patented in England and not the United States like the well-known Gatling Gun. These auxiliary chambers are easily identified by the tapered opening on the rear of the case. Early on, they used a traditional paper cartridge and later switched to the .58 Johnston & Dow cartridge with a Williams bullet. The chambers were preloaded and dropped into the hopper. The design of the Union Repeating Gun was very similar to a coffee grinder hence the nickname "Coffee-Mill” gun. An excellent excavated example with a Type III William’s bullet lodged in the case mouth.
