Z5504 Model 1859 Cavalry Curb Bit (J.E.Condict, New Jersey)
Description: Very nice non-excavated example of a M1859 Cavalry curb bit with a high port. I would rate the condition of this piece as a great barn find. It’s obviously non-excavated but does show some age with a thin, uniform layer of rust/patina. This piece was manufactured by Jennings Elliot Condict of 207 Market St. in Newark, New Jersey. According to the "Directory of American Military Goods Dealers & Makers,” J.E. Condict had a 1864/1865 contract for 5,000 cavalry curb bridles. This bridle bit is complete and still retains all its original components minus the curb chain. Both bit bosses are still intact and firmly attached with copper rivets. One of the "US” bit bosses is upside down. The outside cheek piece is lightly marked, "J.E. CONDICT / NEWARK, NJ.” The inside of the opposite cheek piece is marked with a "2.” The lower bar is still intact and retains its original curved shape. This would make an excellent addition to any Cavalry collection!
Marked: "J.E.CONDICT / NEWARK, NJ”
Measures: L 8.5” x W 5.25”
Recovered: Non-Excavated
