Z5593 George North & Co. Keep Tryst Stove Plate (Harper's Ferry)
Description: Exquisite early Virginia stove plate manufactured by George North & Company near Harper Ferry, Virginia (now West Virginia). From what I’ve been able to research, the George North & Company was owned by John Potts Jr., William Wilson, and George North. They took over the furnace from Henry "Light-Horse Harry” Lee around 1788 and operated the furnace until 1800 when the govt. purchased the land and furnace. At that time, Harper’s Ferry was still located in Berkeley County Virginia. The current Jefferson County wasn't formed until 1801. This piece is in excellent condition and doesn’t have any flaking. It was cleaned with a brass bristle brush to remove any loose material. It would look fantastic with a few coats of Gempler’s rust remover and would make the details pop. The plate reads, "GEORGE NORTH&Co” across the top and "KEEP-TRYST FURNACE” below with an urn and chains in the middle. I’ve seen this listed as Keep Tryst, Keep-Tryst, Keep Triste, and Keep Tryste. There is a hairline crack in this example that appears to be naturally filled by pitch. This piece was taken out of a house in Middleway, West Virginia years ago and was used as a fireback in a sealed-up fireplace! A rare local piece in excellent condition! Local pick up only!
