Z5657 1862 Dated, Ames Model 1840, Type II, Light Artillery Saber
Description: Here is an original early war Model 1840 light artillery enlisted saber with scabbard. According to Thillman, the Type II was manufactured between 1860 and 1865. Thillman states that the Type II "has a flush guard on the blade side without a recess and its corresponding scabbard has a throat mount with the same profile width as the model 1860 cavalry saber. The blade washer was flush with the guard and the pommel cap has a dome, presumably to provide a thicker brass end-cap making the blade end more secure to the hilt.” An order for 1,052 of these was placed in 1862. A total of 839 were delivered in 1862 with the remaining 213 delivered in 1863. This example has the Connecticut surcharge on the ricasso.

This example is in decent shape. The blade has one typical nick with some dark spotting throughout. There is a little pitting throughout with a little more pitting towards the first 6” of the blade tip. The guard has a well-aged patina and is marked with a partial "3” and "LR.” The wire wrap is loose and there is some leather loss here and there throughout. The scabbard may not be original to the sword. The only marking I can find on the scabbard is an "E” or "F” located on the throat. Regardless, the scabbard fits and came with the sword. The throat is a little uneven against the hilt. The scabbard has light pitting with several service dents on the left side and two or three on the right. Overall, a decent sword with a limited 1862 production and a Connecticut surcharge.

Marked on Ricasso: "AMES MFg Co / CHICOPEE / MASS” Obverse Reads, "CONN 1862”
