Z5709 Empty .38 Extra Long Rimfire box by U.M.C.
Description: Decent box that once contained 50 .38 Extra Long rimfire cartridges. This was used in a variety of firearms including Remington, Ballard, Howard, Robinson, etc. This cartridge was introduced in the early 1870’s according to Suydam. Based on Barber’s research the impressed "U” headstamp was used from 1885 onward.
This is a three-piece box consisting of a top, bottom, and an internal insert. This style of box is known as a "fabric” box and has a red top label and side-seal with black print. The top is intact with no split seams. The bottom is missing the left side and the two seams on the right are split. The insert is nice with fabric print wrapped around the exposed portion. The bottom of the box contains the U.M.C. Guarantee which is mostly legible. The top label is intact and legible with the U.M.C. trademark in both corners. In the center is a .38 Ex.-Long rimfire cartridge with an impressed "U” headstamp.
The top label reads as follows:
Fifty, .38 Cal. Extra Long.
