Z5724 New York State Seal Coat Button (Goodwin’s Patent)
Description: Nice New York state seal coat button dating to the late 1870’s+. This example still has plenty of gilt on the face and the shank is intact. On July 27, 1875, Charles H. Goodwin was awarded Patent No. 166,091 for an "Improvement of Buttons.” The improvement is actually for the shape of the wire shank in order to prevent tipping of the shank. I’ve included a picture of the patent drawing.
