Z5759 Attic Found Model 1841 Saber Bayonet, Alteration Unknown?
Description: Very nice "attic” condition Civil War era bayonet that was recently pulled out of an attic in Shepherdstown, West Virginia. Based on my research, I believe this to be a Model 1841 saber bayonet. Plenty of these were made and there were numerous alterations. I’m not exactly sure who did the alteration or where it was done.

There are a few key traits that could help identify this piece. There are a total of 16 ribs on the brass handle. The finger spring length is fairly long at 2.208”. The distance between the start of the slot guide and the spring portion measures .31” in length. You will notice that the back of the finger spring is very close to the edge. The flat portion of the grip is stamped with a "31” or "34” just above the slot guide. The slot guide has a total of two steps up from the initial surface. The second step is quite short.

Overall, this piece is in as found "attic” condition. The cast brass handle is secured with a single iron rivet or pin located on the right side. The patina is dark and thick with some wear on the edges and higher parts of the handle. The blade has a tapered fuller that measures approximately 14” in length. There is even pitting throughout the entire length of the blade.

Update: The only bayonets that I can find with a stepped guide slot were manufactured by the Collins & Co. Both were numbered on the flat and are very similar to this bayonet.
