Z5779 British Marines / Navy Coat Button (War of 1812)
Description: Very nice, excavated one-piece pewter coat button. This example is obviously a water recovery. There is very little edge loss, and the iron shank has rusted away. The backmark is very clear and this example has a reinforced rim on the back.
This style of button is known as the Pre-1802/1803 British Marine button depending on where you look. In 1802/1803 the British Marine pattern changed to the "Royal Marine” pattern with a wreath at the bottom. This style of button with the backmark appears to have been used by the British Navy on up through the War of 1812 in Canada.
