Z6085 .50 Gallager Carbine Cartridge & Packet
Description: Decent .50 Gallager carbine cartridge and an original box. This is the .50 paper and foil pattern. It was manufactured under Poultney's Patent No. 40,988 dated December 15, 1863. The projectile is the same one used in the paper and foil Smith carbine cartridges manufactured under the same patent number. The thin brass foil casing was wrapped in paper. The idea was that once fired, the brass foil would expand creating a gas check in the breech of the gun. This cartridge is right out of a box and is slightly soiled. The side walls are slightly pushed on one side due to the way the cartridges were originally stacked in the box. The box has seen better days. It’s beat to hell but intact with a large portion of the outer paper wrapper and the label is legible.
