Z6473 .50 Smith Carbine Cartridge (Poultney’s Patent)
Description: Decent .50 paper and foil cartridge for the .50 Smith Carbine. This cartridge was manufactured under Poultney's patent of December 15, 1863, as Patent #40,988. This cartridge has the flap case closure unlike the other variant with the folded star closure. The body of the cartridge is a thin sheet of brass wrapped in an outer layer of paper. The idea was that once fired, the foil would expand creating a gas check for the chamber. This example has even soiling throughout and the bullet is slightly loose.
