Z6842 Model 1859 Carbine Thimble or Socket
Description: Decent carbine thimble or socket used in conjunction with the Model 1859 McClellan saddle. The front of the barrel would slide through the hole and keep the barrel in place. The remainder of the carbine would be held up by the shoulder strap on the soldier. This example is in nice shape with the main body exhibiting very little crazing. The strap around the waist is approximately 10” in length and has some crazing. The tip is marked "E.METZGER / PHILA.” The japaned iron buckle is in place. These sockets were used in the Civil War and surplus examples were pressed into service well into the Indian War era.
