Z6859 .38 Special Hollifield Dotter Cartridge (Peters)
Description: Nice .38 Smith & Wesson Special Hollifield Dotter training or practice cartridge. These were used with the Hollifield Dotter attachment system designed by Horatio Hollifield. This attachment for small arms fell under US Patent No. 867728 and was awarded on October 8, 1907.
This system allowed soldiers to train or practice sighting with a small arm and not use live ammunition. The cartridges have a spring-loaded rod on the inside. When fired, they would punch a hole in the paper target.
This example is in nice shape with some tarnishing on the case. The faux bullet appears to be turned brass and soldered directly to the case. The faux primer pocket is filled with lead or solder. The spring-loaded mechanism moves freely within the case.
