Z6986 Hobbs’s Patented .50-70 Govt. Drill Cartridge
Description: Very nice patented .50-70-450 drill cartridge. On September 26, 1871, Alfred Charles Hobbs of Bridgeport, Connecticut was awarded US Patent No. 119,357 for an improvement in cartridges for drill purposes.
The U.S. patent papers state, "The object of this invention is to provide a blank cartridge to be used in drilling troops and teaching them the manipulation of breech-loading arms, in which metallic cartridges are to be used.
This drill cartridge consists of a painted wooden bullet, a copper case, and a rubber plug or disc. located on the center of the head. The rubber plug is held in place by dovetail on the inside of the head. "The rubber disk acts as a cushion to receive the blow imparted to it by the hammer going through the operation of firing, and prevents the shell from being injured, and at the same time affords a medium to resist, more or less, the blow of the hammer, by which the firing-pin or point of the hammer is also preserved from injury.”
Nice example with a lightly necked or cylindrically throated copper case. The wooden bullet retains most of the original black paint and the rubber disc is intact. This example has a few very small, nominal dents.
