Description: Scarce Civil War cartridge known as the .44 Bartholow patented cartridge. These were used in conjunction with the .44 Colt Army revolvers and could be used in other .44 revolvers as well. On May 21, 1861, Robert Bartholow was issued US Patent No. 32,345 for an improved waterproof cartridge.
These cartridges have a pressed powder cake that is treated with a collodion tincture of shellac. This made them waterproof as well as flammable. The powder cake is attached to the ball with a thin band of silk. The survival rate of these cartridges is very low. Most of them have a crack just below the ball like this one. Nice complete example with a cracked case.
