Z7122 16 Ga. Morse’s Patent Shotshell Type 1
Description: Scarce tinned brass Morse’s patent shotshell. Unlike item Z7121, this shotshell was manufactured under George W. Morse’s US Patent No. 20,727 which was awarded on June 29, 1858. This example was manufactured in the traditional manner and didn’t use an insert.

This example has a four-pronged tige or anvil that is soldered to the inside of the case wall. A percussion cap was placed on the anvil and held in place with a rubberized fabric gasket.

This example is in decent shape. The case has darkened, and a lot of tin plating has worn off. There are two dents to the side wall between the head and halfway up the case. The gasket is still in place holding a copper percussion cap on the anvil.

I have classified this example has a Type 1. There appears to be a line just above the rim that goes the entire way around the case. It looks like the base and head may be a separate piece that was soldered together like a Type 2 shell. The line is uniform and deeper on one side. I can’t make out a line on the interior of the case wall so I’m calling this a Type 1.
