Description: This is one of several items recovered from the Fort Pembina privies. Fort Pembina was located just west of the Red River and was built to watch over the Sioux and to ensure the safety of those living along the Red River. The fort was completed in 1870/71 and caught on fire in 1895. Some of the troops assisted in suppressing a Fenian Raid into Canada. The privies were full of items dating from the Civil War up through the Indian War era.
Decent excavated piece of a uniform. This appears to be part of a fatigue or shell jacket. You can clearly see two hand sewn buttonholes and another partial hole on one side. This piece may be Civil War surplus sent West or it’s an Indian War issued piece. Regardless, it is an Indian War Era issued piece. This is another great item that isn’t often recovered in excavated condition. Privies are pretty much the only place these types of artifacts are recovered.
Measures: 2” x 5.75”
