Description: This is one of several items recovered from the Fort Pembina privies. Fort Pembina was located just west of the Red River and was built to watch over the Sioux and to ensure the safety of those living along the Red River. The fort was completed in 1870/71 and caught on fire in 1895. Some of the troops assisted in suppressing a Fenian Raid into Canada. The privies were full of items dating from the Civil War up through the Indian War era.
Excellent, excavated brown stoneware glazed inkwell. This example is in fantastic shape with no chips or cracks. It has a small, rounded lip measuring .660” in diameter. One side is light and fades to a darker brown on the other side. These were used to write military correspondence as well as letters home to loved ones. An excellent Indian War era relic!
