Z7287 Indian War Partial Wood Cartridge Box Insert
Description: This is one of several items recovered from the Fort Pembina privies. Fort Pembina was located just west of the Red River and was built to watch over the Sioux and to ensure the safety of those living along the Red River. The fort was completed in 1870/71 and caught on fire in 1895. Some of the troops assisted in suppressing a Fenian Raid into Canada. The privies were full of items dating from the Civil War up through the Indian War era.

This is a portion of a wood block cartridge insert. These were manufactured to fit inside of the modified cartridge boxes to hold the metallic cartridges in place. The holes measure approximately .58” across which would be appropriate for .50-70 cartridges. The bottom portion and one side appear to be broken off. This style of block doesn’t match anything that I can find in my reference books for .50-70 cartridges. Unfortunately, this item isn’t intact so we can’t determine how long the block would have been. You can tell it would’ve held at least 6 rounds. Most blocks I have seen have the end holes drilled close to the edges. The holes are pretty spaced out on this example. This is an excavated item that isn’t often recovered. An excellent Indian War cartridge block variant!
