Z7426 Schenkl Percussion Fuse for Large Naval Shells
Description: Very nice standard U.S. Schenkl percussion fuse with an extended tube containing an additional bursting charge. These were used in conjunction with the large size Shenkl shells. Jones states, "Although no written documentation has been found, this may have been an experiment by the Navy to ensure that this particular fuse had sufficient power to ignite the bursting charge of the largest Navy shells.”
These are Civil War field artillery fuses with an extended powder tube used in large Naval shells. It’s thought that this modification may be a postwar adaptation. This example has a legible headstamp that reads, "J.P. SCHENKL / PAT OCT 16, 1861.” The original leather washer is still intact, and the base of the extension has a few small dents and one dent to the bottom edge. A scarcer variant!
