Z7386 British Royal Marines Coat Button (War of 1812)
Description: Nice non-excavated pewter Enlisted Man’s pattern British Royal Marine coat button. This pewter one-piece variant is the successor to the earlier pattern. This "Royal Marines” variant replaced the older style based on an order dating to April 29, 1802. The face includes "ROYAL MARINES” above a fouled anchor with the laurel wreath below. The laurel wreath was an honor for service at Belle Isle. This pattern is a War of 1812 button even though the older style surplus buttons were still being pressed into service. This example is slightly convex with a reinforced rim around the back edge. The body is slightly wavy with a raised pattern. There is a little wear to the face, but everything remains clear and legible. The original iron wire shank is intact and moves back and forth. It will not pop out of the back.
