Indian War Era Brush, Fort Pembina
Description: This is one of several items recovered from the Fort Pembina privies. Fort Pembina was located just west of the Red River and was built to watch over the Sioux and to ensure the safety of those living along the Red River. The fort was completed in 1870/71 and caught on fire in 1895. Some of the troops assisted in suppressing a Fenian Raid into Canada. The privies were full of items dating from the Civil War up through the Indian War era.
Nice, Indian War Era brush recovered from the privies at Fort Pembina. This item measures approximately 11” in length and is 2.75” wide. Based on the era of the fort’s existence, the bristles are more than likely horse or hog hair. There are plenty of bristle ends remaining. There are grooves along the edges of the wood plank for grip. This could have been used for anything such as a horse brush, floor brush, etc. This is one of those Indian War relics that would be almost impossible to find in dug condition!
