Description: Nice non-excavated Federal Poncho Hook. These were manufactured under U.S. Patent 36,933 which was award to Abel Putnam Jr. on November 11, 1862. He was awarded this patent for an "Improvement in Spring-Hooks for Fastening Garments.”
This example is constructed of a standard U.S. General Service button face with a plating tin back. The spring hook is placed into the hole on the reverse and held in place by tension. These were used with the rubberized ponchos that were issued to the troops.
This example has a brass face with a little tarnish on the bottom. The back is plated and the backmark or patent date is partially visible. The iron spring hook on the back still retains its shape with light surface rust.
