Z7483 Indian War Camp Shoe, Fort Pembina, North Dakota
Description: This is one of several items recovered from the Fort Pembina privies. Fort Pembina was located just west of the Red River and was built to watch over the Sioux and to ensure the safety of those living along the Red River. The fort was completed in 1870/71 and caught on fire in 1895. Some of the troops assisted in suppressing a Fenian Raid into Canada. The privies were full of items dating from the Civil War up through the late Indian War era.
This is what is referred to as an officer or enlisted man’s fatigue shoe or camp shoe. This style of shoe is what an Infantryman would wear around camp when they weren’t dressed up for drill or duty. There were several types of camp shoes recovered from these privies as well as 1872, 1882 brogans and a few boots. This item was recovered from one of the privies or outhouses and is "as found” condition with a little cleaning. It has a very thick heel, and the main portion has separated from the sole in a few areas. There are numerous holes and issues, but this is typical of privy recovered leather goods. An excellent relic from the Indian War era that isn’t found outside of privy digging!
