Z7553 Rare English .577 Skin Cartridge for the Mont Storm Rifle
Description: Scarce English .577 skin cartridge used in the Mont Storm rifle/carbine. These were manufactured under the British patent awarded to Captain John M. Hayes of the Royal Navy on September 4, 1856. The patent calls for a case made of skin or membrane from the gut of animals. It’s cemented and tied to the lower ring and strengthened by wrapping string around the intestinal case. It was then placed into a paper sleeve or envelope for further protection. These large bore cartridges are far scarcer than the smaller revolver cartridges.
This example is intact with a partial casing. The powder charge is still in decent shape and the case and charge are held in place with a tightly wrapped string around the bottom groove. The cartridge appears to have been lightly coated at some point. This is the first of this type that I have had to offer.
