Z7585 Civil War .44 Tranter Revolver Cartridge Hayes’ Patent
Description: Excellent example of the .44 or 54-gauge Tranter revolver cartridge imported during the American Civil War. These were manufactured under the British patent awarded to Captain John M. Hayes of the Royal Navy on September 4, 1856. The patent calls for a case made of skin or membrane from the gut of animals. It’s cemented and tied to the lower ring and strengthened by wrapping string around the intestinal case. It was then placed into a paper sleeve or envelope for further protection.

This example is in excellent condition with very light soiling. The linen pull strip is still attached as well as the pink paper on the base of the cartridge.
