Description: Here is a decent .58 cartridge produced by Johnston & Dow under their October 1, 1861, patent. This cartridge is combustible and waterproof. These are often referred to as a skin cartridge which is incorrect. These are actually nitrated paper cartridges that were coated in collodion making them waterproof. This is an excavated example that someone tried to stabilize at one time. There are several cracks and a few glue spots on the paper.
